Columbia University Head Instructor: Master
Michael Lee Established in the early
1980s, the Columbia University Taekwondo Club is one of the founding
members of the Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (formerly known
as the Ivy-Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League). Its first instructor,
Grand Master Lee Byung Moo, was one of the pioneers of Taekwondo. Grand
Master Lee was one of the ten original students of General Choi Hong
Hi. The original ten were tasked with bringing Taekwondo to the world,
and prior to teaching in the USA, Grand Master Lee taught in Singapore
including teaching the Singapore Army. As well as teaching at
Columbia, Grand Master Lee ran a school in Queens. In 1991 Grand Master Lee gave the head teaching responsibility to his son, Master Michael Lee, who has been practicing Taekwondo for over 30 years. Under Master Lees tutelage, over 100 Columbia students have become black belts. Master Lee also runs the Masters Martial Arts school in Syosset, Long Island. The club is also instructed by Master M. Sohail Ali Khan, long-time friend of Master Lee. Master Khan is an Olympic coach and coach for New York State. He teaches at Khan Taekwondo in Queens when he is not coaching overseas.
