All of the candidates were considered very carefully - the selection committed comprised of 5 coaches from Division 1, 2 and 3 schools all felt that there were many worthy candidates among the 21 athletes nominated. For that reason, the team was expanded from 4 men and 4 women to 5 men and 5 women this year by the board. The board wishes that we could take all of the candidates, but ultimately we had restrict the team based on what was practical. The votes were tallied by ECTC Referee Chair Jaime Schulte to ensure fairness. In alphabetical order, the All-Star team is: Evan Dudla (RPI) Because Marc Osherson
can not travel on the trip, alternate Adam Fahrenkopf (U Albany) will
be traveling with the team. Princeton

a good idea to start the paperwork on paying the dues for this academic
year sooner rather than later so that the payment will be received in
time for the first tournament of the year at MIT on October 23, 2010,
and so that your school's competitors can receive the discounted league
rate for tournaments of $30/tournament, and continue to have their current
information listed on the ECTC website. Summer Meeting Notes Posted The minutes from the summer meeting on August 22, 2010 are available here. Some changes for this upcoming year: - Electronic chest protectors will be used for the finals of the C, B and A team sparring divisions. No additional gear will need to be purchased this year by teams to support electronic chest protectors - The WTF poomsae
tie-break procedure will be added to the ECTC rules to break ties. Referee
Chair Jaime Schulte will explain this tiebreak procedure at the next tournament. - Uniforms/equipment clarifications - black helmets, insteps, shin guards and forearms are allowed (but not recommended) this year . - Judges holding a red belt are allowed to corner judge D and C-team matches. Corner judges for B and A-team matches must be black belt holders. - Weigh-ins will be streamlined this year, with a mechanism to be determined at a later date allowing competitors to weigh in at remote sites the day before the tournament, with a method of league verification to be determined at a later date. - An ECTC Tournament
Committee composed of league alumni and other qualified parties will be
formed this year to help ensure that there is consistency across the ECTC
events and help tournaments run more efficiently. First Two Tournament Dates of the 2010-2011 ECTC Season Announced The ECTC season

ECTC Athletes Earn Bronze at the World University Taekwondo Championships Congratulations to the current and former members of the ECTC who represented the United States at the World University Games in Vigo Spain from June 30-July 4, 2010! The ECTC was very well represented on this national collegiate Taekwondo team. The womens poomsae team of Carissa Fu (Princeton), Erika Lee (MIT) and Alicia Zhou (Harvard, MIT alumna) earned the first medal of the games for the United States, earning a bronze medal! Bobby Ren (Upper Iowa, MIT alumnus) and Alicia Zhou just narrowly missed the medals, finishing 5th overall and beating out some strong teams to finish one place shy of a bronze medal. The men's team
of Richard-Duane Chambers (Upper Iowa, MIT alumnus), Bobby Ren
and Dan Sauza (MIT) opened the competition for the US. They
gave a strong performance and finished in 6th place overall. Marisa Yarmie (welter, West Point) fought Saina Savage of Finland in her first match. She came from behind to take a 5-4 lead in the final round but her opponent was able to tie the score and score the go ahead point in overtime during a flurry where both players made good contact. Ahn-Khoa Tran (bantam, Harvard) fought Yung-Jen Huang of Chinese Taipei in the first round. He scored some solid kicks to the body but got down early on a head kick and wasn't able to make up the difference in time. The final score was 4-8. Princeton Taekwondo coach, ECTC board member and NCTA president Rex Hatfield served as the team leader. MIT Sport Taekwondo coach, ECTC board member and and NCTA secretary general Dan Chuang served as head coach. Harvard Taekwondo coach and former national team member Michael Tang also served as a team coach. Representing the

I wanted to let the league know that Sal Corma, captain of the 2008 West Point Taekwondo team, died on April 29 while serving his country in Afghanistan. Sal was such a positive presence in our league and someone who I remembered always who took time to know both me as well as fellow athletes from around the league during his 4 years in the INCTL. I spoke him just last month at the 2010 U Penn tournament, which he attended to cheer his team on and support the league. While there, he told me of his plans to travel to Afghanistan just a couple of weeks later and he seemed positive and upbeat about his upcoming deployment. I sensed that he was happy to be doing what he loved in service to the Army and his country. Our condolences are extended to the West Point Taekwondo Team, and Sal's family and friends. Master Jim Montgomery has created a mini-course for sparring corner judges
in the ECTC and the NCTA. The course, which is available in PDF format
by clicking
here, is a guide to everything judges need to know in order to be
fully effective. The course includes just the information (from a referee
seminar) that is relevant to the judge. Although having this presented
by an experienced referee is ideal, the course is intended to be easily
readable by anyone familiar with Taekwondo competition. You can ask ECTC Referee Chair Jaime Schulte any questions you may have about the course throughout the day at the Cornell Tournament.. Click here for referee mini-course! Posted Nov. 2, 2009 Jaime

Point tournament has been announced for Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010. Cornell Tournament Packet Posted The
Cornell tournament packet has been posted to the Tournaments Page. New League Scoring Rules and Points Allocation Announced In light of the new WTF sparring rules, the following scoring for ECTC sparring matches will be in effect for this year: Head kicks (A
and B-team only): 3 points A gap of 10 or more points ends the match, as with last year. No point ceiling will be used. Spinning kicks to the body (like back kick and narabang or 360 roundhouse, 2 points) will be scored using the thumb button on the controllers. Head kicks (3 points) will be also scored using the thumb button. If a head kick is scored, then the action is stopped after the exchange is done, and the center referee will instruct the operator to add one point to the scoring competitor's score to bring the total for that kick to 3 points. Please inform your teams, especially the coaches and black belts who will be helping with scoring. We will demonstrate the rules in front of the entire assembly at the MIT tournament to make it clear to all how the new rules will be enforced. Thanks to our referee advisory committee for helping us talk through the relevant issues: Masters Mark Lesly, Jim Montgomery, Jaime Schulte, Michael Harb, and Albert Lee. Also, in response to a suggestion at the summer meeting, the ECTC board has decided to change the point allocation for the tournaments to reflect the larger participation in the league, and to help recognize the achievements of consistently performing smaller schools. The board believes that under the new rules, smaller but high-performing schools will be able to compete more effectively with larger schools. Points (but no medals) will now be awarded to sparring teams reaching the quarterfinal round (i.e. "5th place") of each sparring division. As before, only two teams from each school may score points in each division. Furthermore, points will be awarded to forms competitors out to 4th place instead of the previous 3 places, with the 4th place competitor awarded a second bronze medal. The overall ratio of sparring to poomsae points will remain the same with the new allocations. The point allocation will be as follows:
Posted Oct. 14, 2009 MIT Tournament Packet Posted The MIT tournament packet has been posted to the Tournaments Page Posted Sept. 22, 2009 League Poomsae Seminar In order to help bring our conference up to speed, Master David Turgeon has again generously volunteered his time to lead a poomsae seminar in Cambridge, MA on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009 from 1-5 pm. As many of you know, Master Turgeon is an International Referee who is again a member of the current US National Poomsae Team, and has volunteered his time at ECTC events before as a referee. As you all know, there will be a rule change for this year's ECTC tournaments, so black belts from each school will have to learn the standards for multiple forms, not just one form. Last year's poomsae seminar was great, but because of time constraints, we were only able to cover Taeguek 1-8. This year, Master Turgeon has promised to go over the black belt forms as well, which should be especially advantageous to everyone. The seminar will be a great chance for you to send your instructors or senior ranks to learn the specific ins and outs of the new WTF standard. Ideally, participants should be familiar with all of the Taeguek forms and at least some of the WTF black belt forms starting with Koryo, but all are welcome. The emphasis will be on specifics, not teaching the actual forms. I hope everyone can make an effort to attend. There will be a nominal $20 fee for the seminar to cover the minimal costs of hosting the seminar and Master Turgeon's expenses. The seminar is open to anyone, whether associated with the league or not. Here is the information: Poomsae Seminar with Master Turgeon Date: Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009 Time: 1-5 pm Location: C.W. to INCTL Rules Announced Forms competition The league will now officially restrict forms to WTF/Kukkiwon forms. For color belt divisions, that means only Taeguek forms will be accepted. For the black belt divisions, that means the Kukkiwon Yudanja forms Koryo, Keumgang, Taebaek, Pyongwon, or Sipjin. Furthermore, the forms should be performed according to the latest WTF/Kukkiwon standards. For the black belt divisions, all competitors will be judged under a modified version of the new WTF scoring methodology. That means that each competitor will be judged one at a time, and will receive separate scores for accuracy and performance. Because it will take longer to process these black belt divisions, each school will be restricted to entering 2 male and 2 female competitors in the black belt forms divisions. There are no restrictions on the number of color belt competitors that schools may enter in each division. Color belts will still be judged two at a time. While the full WTF scoring system may not be used, forms should still be performed according the WTF standard. The forms performed in each division should be: White/yellow:

All-Star Team Competes at UCLA Sport Taekwondo Open
Congratulations to the INCTL All-Star team, who traveled to Los Angeles to participate in the UCLA Sport Taekwondo Open on Jan. 19, 2008. Prior to the tournament, the team also trained with the UCLA Taekwondo Club under the direction of Coach Tim Thackery, and with the USC Taekwondo Club under the direction of Coach Clayton Barber. The All-Star team was selected based on their outstanding performance and participation in the league during 2007. Coaching the team on the trip were Coaches Dan Chuang (MIT) and Tim Marmo (NYU). The team put together a fine performance in very competitive field at the UCLA Sport Taekwondo, which fielded top-caliber collegiate and non-collegiate athletes. Among the men, Augustine Pyo (Tufts) earned a bronze medal in men's welter weight and Dan Shalev (Harvard) earned a bronze in men's feather weight. Richard Peterson (NYU) was contesting a very close match in men's welter weight when he had to bow out due to injury, and Kevin Kim (Cornell) won one and lost one match in the men's feather weight bracket. WTF-style gloves are not required but they are recommended and may be required next year. School divisions - schools will be partitioned into three divisions: Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3. Depending on the points scored, at the end of the season a winner for Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 will be announced.
