ECTC All-Star Team Announcement

The board thanks all of the coaches who submitted applicants for the ECTC All-Star Team. All of the candidates were considered very carefully - the selection committee comprised of 5 coaches from Division 1, 2 and 3 schools all felt that there were many worthy candidates among the 18 athletes nominated, and that all of the applications without exception were outstanding.

The committed and ECTC Board wish that we could take all of the candidates, but ultimately we are only able to choose a few. The votes were tallied by ECTC Referee Chair Jaime Schulte to ensure fairness.

In alphabetical order for each of the men and women, the All-Star team is:

Men

Aziz Abdellahi (MIT)
Joseph Chan (Penn State)
Marc Osherson (Johns Hopkins)
Michael Sybert (Penn State)
Matt Weinberg (MIT)

Women

Rae Drach (Princeton)
Cyriesse "Shelly" Hall (Columbia)

ECTC Announces New Point Thresholds For Divisions

On the pre-season conference call with the league it was mentioned that the point threshold for a school to enter Division 1 would likely be lowered from 1000 points to 800. The threshold for Division 2 would remain 200.

It was said the 800 figure would be revisited after the fall tournaments, to see if it still seemed appropriate after observing the effect of rule changes on this season. The rule changes have so far had little effect on points, so the Board has decided to make this change.

The 800/200 point totals were intended for a 5-tournament season, however. Since we will be having a 4-tournament season this year the point totals have been adjusted to 80% of normal.

Any school reaching 640 points this season will be in Division 1 next season.
Any school reaching 160 points this season will be in Division 2 next season.

640/160 will be the point thresholds in 4-tournament seasons and 800/200 in 5-tournament seasons.

ECTC Announces Black Belt Poomsae For Spring Tournaments

The Board has opted not to change the selected poomsae for the spring tournaments. The third tournament of the season was cancelled, so we will proceed to the fourth tournament at Princeton on Sunday, February 19th and the fifth tournament in April (TBD). That means:

The Princeton tournament will have Taebaek in the first (semi-final) round and Pyongwon in the final.

The April tournament will have Pyongwon in the semi-final round and Shipjin in the final.

ECTC Adopts Safety Rules for B-Team Sparring

Starting at the next ECTC tournament, B-teams will now use "Safety Rules" (USA Taekwondo Junior Safety Rules) for head contact, to provide that stepping stone for the colored belts before they reach A-team.

Here's how Safety Rules work: head contact will score 3 points for any type of scoring kick (no 4-point kick) unless the kick was hard enough that the competitor needs a few moments to recover (like an 8-count in A-team).

These harder kicks that cause the competitor to need recovery time will be handled much like an intentional punch to the face:

1) The competitor who was kicked gets an injury time (1 minute) to recover.

2) The kicker receives a gamjeom 1 point penalty (there is no kyungo for kicks to the head that are too hard in Safety Rules).

3) If points were initially scored by the judges for the head kick they will be taken off.

4) If kicked player indicates that they are ready/able to continue within one minute (usually the case) the match will resume. If not, the kicker is disqualified.

Princeton Tournament Cancelled

It is with regret that the ECTC is announcing the cancellation of the Princeton tournament this fall. The board tried very hard to find an alternative that would be workable, both geographically, and accommodating the academic schedules of the league, and could not find an alternative.

I would encourage everyone to make an even stronger effort to attend the Cornell Tournament this upcoming weekend, as it will be the final tournament of the semester!

Most likely, this means that there will be only 4 ECTC tournaments this year. The board will make every effort to announce the date of the remaining tournaments soon! As a consolation, the National Collegiate Taekwondo Championships will be held at MIT on April 7-8. Hopefully the league will have a strong turnout there!

ECTC Athletes at the World University Games

Several current and former ECTC members competed at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, from August 18-23. Also traveling on the trip were US Collegiate Taekwondo Team Manager Rex Hatfield (Princeton Taekwondo head coach) and US Collegiate National Team Poomsae Coach Dan Chuang (MIT Taekwondo head coach). Photos from the trip can be seen at:

http://ncta-usa.com/2011/08/14/2011-universiade-photos/

Rene Chen (Rhode Island School of Design, MIT alumna) competed in the preliminaries in the female individual division, performing Taeguek 5 and Taeguek 6. Chen was 11th in the standings going into the semifinals, where she performed Taeguek 8 and Koryo, which bumped her up to an impressive 6th place and qualifying her for the finals. In the finals, Chen performed Keumgang and Taebaek. A couple of missteps on Keumgang dropped her to an overall finish of 8th place, but it was an impressive run and the best result for a US female individual poomsae competitor at a world collegiate event.

Rene Chen and Brandon DeSouza (U Mass Lowell) competed in the mixed pairs division. They performed Keumgang and Taebaek, finishing 13th overall but falling shy of the finals round.

The women's team division was represented by Rene Chen, Erika Lee (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Carissa Fu (Princeton University). The women's team performed Taeguek 8 and Koryo, giving a strong performance in the semifinals. They finished 9th, just 1 place shy of the finals by a margin of 0.08 points.

ECTC Athletes at the World Poomsae Championships

Four former ECTC athletes competed at the World Poomsae Championships on July 29-31, 2011 in Vladivostok, Russia. Each of the four athletes qualified for the US National Poomsae team at the US National Poomsae Team Trials in Buffalo, NY during May 2011. The level at the Championships was extraordinarily high with every country bringing well-trained and well-prepared athletes at every age bracket.

In the Senior 1 (19-30 yrs) female division, Rene Chen (MIT alum) competed. There were 33 in her division. Chen took fifth out of sixteen in her preliminary bracket (Taeguek 6/7).

In the Team 1 (14-35 yrs) female division, Rene Chen, Christina Park (MIT alum) and Lisa Zhou (U Penn alum), there were 18 teams, all very competitive. They performed Taebaek and Pyongwon in the semifinals and gave a very solid performance, but missed the very competitive finals (top 8) cut.

In the Senior 2 (31-40 yrs) male division Dan Chuang (MIT coach, Cornell alum) competed. There were 31 in the division. Chuang competed in the preliminaries with Taeguek 7/Koryo and missed the semifinal cut by a close 0.05 margin.
